BUG LAB
For seven months, the Perot Museum
hosted Bug Lab, an immersive
exhibition that invited visitors to step
into the world of bugs and discover
their remarkable adaptations. Created
by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa

Tongarewa in collaboration with Wet
Workshop, whose Academy Awardwinning special effects brought “The
Lord of the Rings” to life, the exhibition
featured ultra-detailed, large-scale bug
models and interactive experiences that
took more than 40,000 hours to build.
Visitors explored six zones showcasing
different bug adaptations: display,
flight, venom, exoskeleton, swarms,
and silk. Each zone featured a “master
bug” inside its own immersive chamber
with dramatic lighting, an original
soundscape, and high-definition video —
from the deceptive orchid mantis to the
hunting dragonfly to the clever defense
strategies of the Japanese honeybee.
Through hands-on interactives, visitors
tested their abilities against the bugs
while learning how humans are drawing
inspiration from them to solve complex
problems in medicine, engineering, and
technology. The exhibition combined
cutting-edge science with spectacular
artistry to transform trepidation about
bugs into inspiration and awe.
